The following is an interpretation by Kroy Sign Systems regarding more critical specifications of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, released by the Department of Justice, September 15, 2010, as it pertains to signs and should not be construed as a complete list of requirements. PERMANENT ROOMS & SPACES

TYPESTYLES - 703.2.3: Only San Serif Thin Stroke fonts will be allowed for raised characters.

CHARACTER HEIGHT - 703.2.5: Character height measured vertically from the baseline of the character shall be 5/8” minimum and 2” maximum based on the height of the uppercase letter “I”.

Exception: Signs that have separate Visual and Raised Characters with the same information, allows for raised characters as small as ½” minimum as long as the 1/8” spacing is maintained.

STROKE THICKNESS - 703.2.6: Stroke thickness of the uppercase letter “I” shall be 15 percent maximum of the height of the character.

CHARACTER SPACING - 703.2.7: Characters must be widely spaced with 1/8” minimum between the two closest points regardless of the character height. Characters shall be separated from raised borders and decorative elements a minimum of 3/8”.

UPPERCASE CHARACTER - 703.2.2: Characters shall be uppercase.

LINE SPACING - 703.2.8: Spacing between the baselines of separate lines of raised characters within a message shall be 135 percent minimum and 170 percent maximum of the raised character height.

BRAILLE POSITION - 703.3.2: Grade 2 Braille placement must be directly below the raised text. When multi-lined, Braille will be positioned below the entire text a minimum of 3/8” spacing.

INSTALLATION HEIGHT - 703.4.1: Tactile characters on signs shall be located 48” minimum above finish floor or ground surface, measured from the baseline of the lowest tactile character and 60” maximum measured from the baseline of the highest tactile character.

SIGNS WITH VISUAL CHARACTERS

VISUAL CHARACTERS - 703.5.5: 5/8” minimum letter height for signs less than 72” horizontal viewing distance. 2” minimum letter height for signs less than 180“ horizontal viewing distance. 3” minimum letter height for signs less than 21’ horizontal view distance.

PICTOGRAM FIELD - 703.6.1: Pictograms shall have a field height of 6” minimum. Characters and Braille shall not be located in the pictogram field.

GENERAL SITE AND BUILDING ELEMENTS

PARKING SPACES - 502.6: Parking space identification signs shall include the International Symbol of Accessibility complying with 703.7.2.1. Signs identifying van parking spaces shall contain the designation "van accessible". Signs shall be 60 inches (1525 mm) minimum above the finish floor or ground surface measured to the bottom of the sign.
